Some weddings you photograph and walk away thinking, that was a beautiful day. And then there are the ones where you walk away thinking, those are remarkable people. Charlene and Chris's wedding at Sassafras Vineyard in Springdale, Arkansas was very much the latter, but actually, a little of both.
Getting Ready | The Peacock Room
When I arrived at Sassafras on Sunday, the Arkansas sun was already making its presence known. Warm, bright, and just a little bit relentless, just the kind of day that reminds you why vineyards have shade and why good lighting matters.
The bride and her ladies, along with their Man of Honor, were getting ready in the Peacock Room, and it was the perfect setup. Lovely, big windows poured in the most gorgeous natural light, which the makeup artists absolutely made the most of. These talented ladies did a stunning job, and Charlene's hair? An absolute dream. She was glowing before she even put on her dress.
Meanwhile, a short golf cart ride away, Chris and the guys were getting ready in their own corner of the vineyard, probably significantly less concerned about hair and makeup, but no less excited about the day ahead.
The First Look
As soon as Charlene was ready, we slipped away to a semi-private spot on the property at Sassafras Vineyard for the First Look, and it was one of those moments that reminds me exactly why I love this job.
Chris had his back to her. She walked up. She tapped his shoulder. He turned around.
I'll just say this: I don't think words landed for him immediately. The way he looked at her said everything. And Charlene? She lit up seeing how handsome he looked, too. They had a few quiet minutes, just the two of them, to take it all in before the world came rushing back. Those minutes were theirs. I just got to be lucky enough to witness them.
The Ceremony
Their ceremony was held in the sun, the full, unfiltered, gorgeous, slightly-merciless Arkansas May sun. But nobody seemed to mind for even a second, because what was happening in that space was simply too meaningful to be bothered by heat.
Their friend Nick officiated, and he did something that so many officiants strive for but rarely achieve: he made it feel personal. Like he actually knew these two people, because he does. His words were warm, specific, and real.
One of the most beautiful moments of the ceremony was the handfasting, a cord tied around their joined hands, literally "tying the knot." It's an old tradition, and watching it felt ancient and intimate at the same time.
After exchanging vows and rings, Charlene and Chris were pronounced husband and wife, and the whole vineyard seemed to exhale with joy.
A Reception Like No Other
Here's what made their reception especially unique: scattered throughout were stations representing destinations they've traveled together over the past couple of years... Scotland, Japan, and more. Each one a small, curated piece of their shared story. It told you something immediately about who they are as a couple: curious, adventurous, intentional. They didn't just want a ceremony - they wanted their reception. And they wanted to celebrate it with their loved ones.
Their first dance was oroginal and connected. The kind where you can tell they weren't performing for anyone in the room, they were just with each other.
Then came the parent dances, and this is where the emotions heightened. Chris dancing with his mother was beautiful. But the moment that truly stopped the room? Charlene dancing with Chris's dad. It was tender, emotional, and deeply sweet, a gesture that spoke volumes about the kind of person Charlene is and the family she's stepping into.
And then — then — we all sang happy birthday to Charlene.
Because of course it was also her birthday. And of course she was completely unbothered by the fact that her wedding day and her birthday landed on the same date, and of course she handled it with the same easy, joyful confidence she brought to the whole day. That's just who she is. She and Chris do things the way that feels right to them, and it is genuinely inspiring.
The toasts, as always, were a window into the couple's world, especially for me, meeting them for the first time through a camera lens. Every single person who spoke radiated this absolute certainty: these two belong together. Not in a clichéd way. In a way that felt earned, observed, known. Their friends clearly love them deeply and were overjoyed to celebrate them.
A Note on Charlene & Chris
Every couple is special in their own way, that's genuinely true. But every so often you meet people who just stand out, not because they're trying to, but because of who they actually are.
Charlene and Chris are generous. They're grounded. They have this calm, unhurried quality that makes everyone around them feel at ease (including their photographer.) Being in their orbit for a day felt like a gift, and I left that vineyard rooting for them in the way you root for people you've just met but somehow already know are going to be just fine.
More than fine.
They are, without question, each other's person.
